September 5. 2025. PRO | Chiefs Vs. Chargers

What an incredible start to the season! The NFL's first-ever game in Brazil delivered all the drama and excitement we could have asked for, with the Chargers taking down the Chiefs 27-21 in a back-and-forth thriller.

This game was a masterclass in contrasts, showcasing a new-look Chargers team that's a lot more comfortable with the pass game than we might have expected, and a Chiefs offense that, for the first half at least, looked like it was still getting its bearings.

The Chargers' Statement Win 27- 21

Under new coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers were expected to be a run-first, grind-it-out team. And while rookie running back Omarion Hampton had some nice moments, it was Justin Herbert who truly stole the show. He was on fire, dissecting the Chiefs' defense with surgical precision. Herbert finished the night with 318 yards and three touchdowns, looking absolutely in sync with his receivers.

The connection with his receiving corps was a thing of beauty. He found old reliable Keenan Allen, who looked fantastic in his return to the team, and even more importantly, he found a reborn Quentin Johnston, who had a career night with two touchdowns. And let's not forget Ladd McConkeyβ€”that sliding catch inside the 30 was just gorgeous.

When the Chiefs were threatening a late-game comeback, who sealed the deal? Herbert, of course. His 19-yard scramble on third-and-14 to ice the game was a gut punch to Kansas City and a hero-making moment for him. That's the kind of play that wins games, and it's a huge statement from a Chargers team that has been looking for a signature win against their biggest rival.

Chiefs' First-Half Struggles and a Familiar Comeback

The Chiefs' offense was a head-scratcher early on. With Rashee Rice suspended and rookie Xavier Worthy going down just three plays into the game with a shoulder injury, the Chiefs' passing game looked out of sorts. It felt like a struggle just to move the ball, and they went a brutal 0-for-7 on third-down conversions in the first half.

But you can never, ever count out Patrick Mahomes. Even with the struggles, he kept the Chiefs in it. That jaw-dropping 59-yard field goal from Harrison Butker as the first half expired was a true "Chiefs magic" moment that kept the deficit manageable.

And in the second half, the comeback began. Mahomes started to find his rhythm, making plays with both his arm and his legs, including a career-high 57 yards rushing. He connected with Hollywood Brown for a huge 49-yard gain on fourth down and, in a moment that felt all too familiar, threw a beautiful 37-yard touchdown to Travis Kelce that momentarily brought the Chiefs within two points.

Ultimately, it wasn't enough. The missed extra point and a failed two-point conversion came back to haunt them, and the Chargers' offense just kept firing on all cylinders. This game was a wake-up call for the Chiefs, but it was also a reminder that no lead is safe against Mahomes.
